An international pop superstar and a bunch of sweaty dudes running around on a muddy football field seems like an unlikely combination. However, much like chocolate and chili, sometimes the unlikely combinations are the best.
This Flashback Friday we revisited an ad that enlisted the glamorous American Tina Turner to promote a down and dirty true blue Aussie sport, Rugby League.
If you haven’t seen it, the 1990 Winfield Cup TVC showed Tina Turner singing her hit song Simply The Best and having a surprisingly awesome time for an American diva at the Australian Rugby. In 1993, Jimmy Barnes joined in and Australia went nuts for it.
The Simply the Best campaign was the most successful and longest running NRL campaign, gracing our screens from 1990 – 1995.
This season, Foxtel tapped into the song’s historical connection with league fans to promote their NRL season. However, the new version is a little different.
Simply Obsessed is a tongue-in-cheek version of the Tina Turner and Jimmy Barnes song and is performed by Jimmy Barnes’ daughter Mahalia.
It plays on Australia’s obsession with sport, poking fun at the consequences that rugby league obsession can have on people’s personal lives.
