What is salary packaging?

Salary packaging, also called salary sacrificing, is a benefit offered by your employer that lets you pay for some everyday goods and services before your tax is calculated. This means you pay less income tax and keep more in your take home pay.

What you can salary package depends on your employer, industry and your employment status.

  • Save on tax by using pre-tax income for everyday expenses like meals and entertainment
  • More pay left in your pocket
  • Simple and ATO approved

How salary packaging could provide cost of living relief

If mortgage or rent payments are your biggest financial stressor at the moment, you’re not alone.

Smart’s cost of living report, Stretching Your Salary: How Australians are Managing Cost of Living Pressures2, found the biggest pressures on monthly budgets are mortgage payments (28.3% of respondents) and rent (24.4% of respondents).

Healthcare workers can generally salary package their mortgage or rent – one of the few industries that can. It’s a smart way to stretch your income during tough times. Discover if you’re missing out on benefits available to you.

You can still salary package if you have a HECS/HELP debt

While salary packaging may increase the HECS/HELP repayments you need to make, the tax benefits of salary packaging can often outweigh the extra payments you may have to make against your HECS/HELP debt – keeping more in your pocket.

You’ll just need to let your payroll know that you’re salary packaging and to adjust the amount they withhold for HECS/HELP.

Discover how salary packaging could work your HECS/HELP debt to your advantage.
